The session follows a 23-page U.N. report, released on March 4, written by a team led by Pramila Patten, a special envoy on sexual violence and conflict. The report said it was reasonable to believe sexual violence against hostages could be ongoing. Diplomats from the 15-member council uniformly condemned sexual violence against Israeli women. Ms. Patten and her team also visited the West Bank to hear reports of sexual violence against Palestinians by Israeli security forces and settlers. The full report addressed the accusations, but did not focus on them because other U.N. bodies were working on that.

Turkish annual inflation soars to 67% in February

Turkish annual consumer price inflation soared to 67.07% in February, the Turkish Statistical Institute said Monday, coming in above expectations. Analysts polled by Reuters had anticipated annual inflation would climb to 65.7% last month. The combined sector of hotels, cafes and restaurants saw the greatest annual price inflation increase at 94.78%, followed by education at 91.84%, while the rate for health stood at 81.25% and transportation at 77.98%, according to the statistical institute. "Obviously a disappointing set of inflation prints this morning," Timothy Ash, emerging markets strategist at BlueBay Asset Management, wrote in a note. He added that this development has "continued to put downward pressure on the lira," creating an inflation pass-through.

The United States, Germany, the U.K., Spain, Poland and NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg were among those denying that sending ground troops into Ukraine was an option. She claimed NATO countries' denials that they planned to send their ground troops into Ukraine showed the West had "betrayed Ukraine and will continue to use and betray it," repeating Moscow's baseless claims that Western countries are using Ukraine to destroy Russia. After the conference, Macron said discussions had also covered the possibility of deploying ground troops, although he said there was no agreement on the issue. France was left looking increasingly isolated throughout the day Tuesday, with the White House also distancing itself from Macron's comments. When asked about Macron's comments, Kirby said "well, that's a sovereign decision that every NATO ally would have to make for themselves.

In the last 15 months, Wall Street analysts have hailed generative AI as the most impactful innovation in decades and compared its theoretical impact to that of the internet. While the full impact of AI isn't clear yet, companies are under immense pressure to convince investors that they're not falling behind. "We can't envision any of these large cloud companies or consumer companies pulling back on AI spending anytime soon," Colello said. UBS"This is not always a harbinger of slowing revenue growth and a concentrated H200/B100 launch could be adding to near-term opex," Arcuri wrote in a recent note. That led several Wall Street banks to hike their price targets to account for the unrelenting demand. Bernstein and other Wall Street shops raced to catch up with Nvidia's share price, hiking their price targets in reaction to nonstop demand and the company's enormous total addressable market. Rasgon's new target was the equivalent of 48% upside from Wednesday's close, while the average price target according to FactSet implied more than 22% upside. Bank of America's Vivek Arya also lifted his Nvidia price target to $925 per share, equal to about 37% upside. JPMorgan analyst Harlan Sur boosted his price target to $850 to reflect strong data center growth and future product launches.

Some Wall Street analysts are bracing for a pullback in Nvidia shares after the chipmaker reports fiscal fourth quarter results after the bell Wednesday. "We reiterate Buy/top pick ahead of NVDA Feb-21 earnings but won't be surprised to see a notable but brief pullback after the recent parabolic run-up in the stock," wrote Bank of America analyst Vivek Arya in a recent note. Nvidia shares slid more than 4% during Tuesday's session, but they have surged 40% in 2024. "Hence, we see limited room for further earnings upside in 2024 relative to the sales and earnings surprise that we saw in 2023." Even if Nvidia tops estimates, some on Wall Street anticipate a post-earnings decline akin to what's occurred during previous prints.

Data center capacity constraints could one day eat into Nvidia's revenue potential, according to UBS analysts. "A major factor that we believe will probably start coming into play is data center capacity — which we do think starts to hurt revenue, albeit maybe more in 2026 than in 2025," Arcuri said, in a separate report. For the fourth quarter, UBS expects Nvidia to report data center revenue of $19.45 billion, which would entail sequential growth of 34%. It also expects revenue and earnings per share, as well as data center revenue, to increase in 2025 and 2026. According to FactSet, average estimates for data center revenue are around $17.06 billion and $20.4 billion in total revenue for the fourth quarter.

CNN —The immigration and border crisis is quickly morphing into the dominant issue of American politics – and Democrats are pivoting faster than Republicans at the moment. It took two tries, but House Republicans made their point and voted by the narrowest possible margin to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the first impeachment of a Cabinet secretary since the 1870s. He tacked to the middle specifically on the issue of immigration, hammering Republicans for refusing to work with Democrats on an immigration compromise. Except voters concerned about immigration told CNN reporters that it was also dysfunction on Capitol Hill – Republicans rejected even the idea of a bipartisan immigration deal last week – that drove their votes. Democrats and Republicans in the Senate joined together to pass a foreign aid package this week after it was decoupled from the border compromise.

Why AI can’t replace air traffic controllers

In the air traffic control system, everything must meet the highest levels of safety, but not everything goes according to plan. I’m an aerospace engineer who led a National Academies study ordered by Congress about air traffic controller staffing. What air traffic controllers do? The Federal Aviation Administration’s fundamental guidance for the responsibility of air traffic controllers states: “The primary purpose of the air traffic control system is to prevent a collision involving aircraft.” Air traffic controllers are also charged with providing “a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of air traffic” and other services supporting safety, such as helping pilots avoid mountains and other hazardous terrain and hazardous weather, to the extent they can. Researchers are using machine learning to analyze and predict aspects of air traffic and air traffic control, including air traffic flow between cities and air traffic controller behavior.

The day before awarding Carroll $83.3 million in damages — Trump's penance for calling her a lying "whack job" when she told the world he'd sexually assaulted her — jurors heard, firsthand, how rich he was. Punitive damages in defamation cases are supposed to have a deterrent effect, to stop the defamation from happening again. Purdue Pharma headquarters in 2019; a Purdue lawyer said in court Monday that if a settlement with the company didn’t go forward, opioid-crisis victims might not see compensation. Photo: timothy a. clary/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—Supreme Court justices wrestled Monday with the uncomfortable bargain struck between most victims of the opioid crisis and the Sackler family, whose Purdue Pharma promoted the addictive painkiller OxyContin: providing timely compensation for survivors in exchange for granting the wealthy family immunity from future civil lawsuits. That settlement was reached before a bankruptcy judge and approved in May by a federal appeals court in New York. It would see the Sacklers pay $6 billion to individual victims and state governments in exchange for eliminating potential liability for additional claims, such as fraud—even though they, unlike Purdue, haven’t sought bankruptcy protection. The deal was made under a catchall provision of federal law authorizing bankruptcy judges to issue orders and judgments that may be “necessary or appropriate” to resolve cases.
